I.N.D.I.A. Bloc Considers Impeachment of Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar
Parliament was adjourned a day earlier than scheduled on Friday, amid growing tensions between Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and the Opposition I.N.D.I.A. bloc, which is considering initiating impeachment proceedings against him. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, which began on July 22, concluded after passing the Budget and introducing a controversial Waqf laws amendment bill, referred to a joint committee.
The I.N.D.I.A. bloc, citing dissatisfaction with Dhankhar’s conduct, has collected signatures from over 60 MPs for a three-page notice against him. The move gained momentum after a heated exchange between Dhankhar and the Opposition in Rajya Sabha over remarks made by BJP MP Ghanshyam Tewari against Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge. Despite this, a decision on when to submit the notice has not yet been made.
Dhankhar, rejecting accusations of bias towards the government, defended his actions, stating, “I have my own script. I am not operated by anyone else.” NDA leaders, including BJP president J.P. Nadda, condemned the Opposition’s behavior, expressing full support for Dhankhar. The session ended with Opposition MPs, led by Sonia Gandhi, walking out in protest.
